Botany Department of the University of Yangon

The Botany Department of the University of Yangon sets
its objectives to conduct academic and research programmes concern...ing plant sciences.
These objectives are
- development of efficient and effective human resources,
- improvement of post graduate or doctoral programmes,
- improvement of botanical sciences programmes,
- high standard of learning and high quality research.
The Department has 80 staff members and offers courses leading to Bachelor degree, Master of Science, Master of Research and Doctor of Philosophy in Botany and Microbiology.
Candidates for the Bachelors (undergraduate) and Master of Science in Botany and Microbiology degree study the following courses:
Evolutionary survey of Plant Kingdom,
Environmental science,
Principles of Taxonomy,
Horticulture,
medicinal plants,
Cell biology,
morphogenesis,
microbiology,
Plant embryology,
Molecular genetics,
evolution and biostatistics,
Plant physiology,
Biochemistry,
Biodiversity of plants,
Industrial microbiology and biotechnology,
Pharmacognosy,
Fundamental techniques in biotechnology,
Plant biochemistry and biotechnology,
Fundamental techniques Phytochemistry,Environmental science,
Plant microtechniques,
Agricultural biology,
Plant collection techniques.

#For the Ph.D Programmes the following subjects are studied:
Plant systematics,
Principles and concepts of theories on plant groups and their evolution,
Molecular cell biology,
Pharmacognosy,
Plant pathology,
Microbiology,
Biotechnology,
Biostatistics,
Analytical techniques,
Plant biotechnology.

The Department of Botany awarded
its first doctorate degree in 2001 .
A new interdisciplinary Master of Science course was introduced to take the leading role in teaching of environmental studies and Microbiology.
The staffs of the Department also actively participate in lectures and practical demonstrations for undergradutes and Master students of the Botany, Microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry and environmental studies courses.

Under the CHRD programme the Botany Department also conducts lectures on environmental studies leading to a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Sc Eng) degree.

The Department has signed many MOUs with international NGOs.
The academic staffs of the Department are active in field researches and participates in international seminars and workshops.
They also collaborate with international scientists in many botanical surveys inside the country.
The Botany Department has well-equipped laboratories as well as a reference library, e- library, computer room and a herbarium.
